Desert Island Survival: Unexpected Essentials for Your Stay

Written on

Chapter 1: Unlikely Survival Items

When contemplating what to bring to a deserted island, it's a bit of a conundrum. My favorite belongings might not serve much purpose in such a setting, yet let’s try to justify my selections!

For starters, I would opt for my Kindle, my makeup kit, and a cherished wedding photo. Reading is essential for me; my Kindle houses around 5,000 titles, spanning classics to contemporary works, particularly in fantasy and history. It sharpens my intellect and provides comfort during tough times. However, I must admit, it requires charging, and I assume there's no power source on this island?

Now, you might question the inclusion of my makeup kit—certainly not a survival necessity. Yet, it's about holding onto a sense of normalcy and self-care. For me, applying makeup is a daily ritual that boosts my confidence and reflects my identity, not to mention my blonde hair! Is there a salon hidden somewhere on this island?

Lastly, I keep my wedding photo close, representing love and commitment, and serving as a reminder of joy before my husband Tony's cancer diagnosis. Although we tied the knot in 2020, our journey began 14 years earlier. Our wedding was a modest affair during lockdown, attended only by our two closest friends as witnesses, all while donning face masks—hardly the romantic atmosphere one dreams of! Unfortunately, we couldn't capture indoor photographs despite the venue being beautifully adorned with autumn flowers. Nevertheless, we exchanged vows and rings, and later enjoyed a delightful meal together.

So, those are my three chosen items for an extended island stay. While they may not be practical, they play a crucial role in helping me retain my sense of self, and that's what truly matters!
