# Electric Vehicles in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

Chapter 1: The Reality of Transportation in Uganda
Navigating public transport in Uganda was an entirely unique experience for me. Whether I was perched on the back of a boda boda motorbike cruising over Jinja's undulating red hills or wedged between several fellow travelers on a motatu bus during the sweltering summer, each journey felt like an adventure.
I eventually became accustomed to the cacophony of rocks crunching beneath speeding tires and the enticing aromas of street-side grilled chicken and roasted maize wafting through open windows. However, nothing prepared me for the moment when a driver abruptly halted to refuel their motorbike using petrol-filled Coca-Cola bottles acquired from the bustling local market.
Transfer points presented their own set of challenges. Rows of sister vehicles sat dormant in a crowded lot, their seats showing signs of extensive wear and tear, while faded blue sliding doors bore the marks of years gone by. As I wandered through the lines of buses, the unmistakable scent of gasoline reminded me of the long intervals these vehicles had likely gone without proper maintenance.
It wasn't until I strolled through Mbale's inner-city streets, past sprawling tarps of imported T-shirts and shops selling bootlegged American films, that I began to grasp the complex interplay of industrial imports and the philanthropic culture rooted in excess.
Many vehicles on Uganda's roads are second-hand imports from countries like Japan, Germany, or the UK. This trend of aging, petrol-driven vehicles extends well beyond Uganda, with over 1.2 million used cars imported across Africa in 2017.
Recent government regulations have started to limit the age of imported vehicles, driven by concerns over carbon emissions from transportation. To sustainably tackle the challenges of air quality, pollution control, and employment opportunities that arise from the second-hand market, an expansion of local manufacturing is likely necessary.
So, What’s the Situation with Electric Vehicles?
With the current buzz around electric vehicles (EVs), I became curious about Africa's progress in this area. The environmental advantages of EVs over fossil fuel-powered vehicles are abundantly clear. Zero-emission vehicles offer a compelling vision of sustainability, providing a guilt-free option for environmentally aware consumers. But how does this apply to regions in Sub-Saharan Africa, where access to reliable electricity is alarmingly low—averaging just 43%?
Promoting a sustainable EV transition across Africa will undoubtedly require significant national investment and a reevaluation of existing infrastructure challenges. However, as urbanization continues across the continent, there is no reason that progress cannot be made in an environmentally friendly manner.
Many nations are now striving to meet their electricity demands through renewable energy sources, and promoting electric vehicles as a transport alternative could serve to alleviate the growing dependency on fossil fuels.
Chapter 2: Current Initiatives and Future Prospects
South Africa has emerged as a forerunner in adopting electric vehicle technology, boasting two prominent EV models and around 180 charging stations. Currently, there are about 1,000 EVs on South African roads.
In Uganda, the state-owned Kiira Motors is working to produce a locally-designed electric sedan and bus using homegrown materials and the creativity of recent graduates. If all goes as planned, the plant should be fully operational this year, aiming to manufacture 5,000 electric vehicles annually.
Other cities, such as Lagos, Kigali, and Nairobi, are also beginning to implement similar initiatives. While these countries still have a long way to go toward a comprehensive green revolution, progress is underway, and now is a pivotal moment for change.

Chapter 3: Addressing the Challenges of EV Transition
While I remain hopeful about the transition to electric vehicles and the potential health and environmental benefits it may bring—like cleaner air in congested urban areas—it is crucial to recognize that as African communities carve their own paths toward sustainability, industrial models from other regions must also prioritize the rights and welfare of vulnerable populations.
Significant issues persist regarding the environmental consequences and human rights violations linked to the mining of materials needed for electric vehicle batteries. For instance, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to nearly 50% of the world's cobalt reserves, with 20% of cobalt sourced from mines where children work under perilous conditions.
These pressing challenges must be addressed by the industry. Instead of deepening existing disparities, the electric vehicle transition should aim to alleviate the struggles faced by Africa's most disadvantaged communities.
