Embrace the Shift: Why Newsletters Are the Future of Content
Written on
The Decline of Traditional Blogs
Have you ever wondered if blogs are fading away?
Here's something to consider: When was the last time you visited someone’s website to check their updates? Personally, I struggle to recall. When I want to catch up with content from Gary Vee, I don’t visit his site. Instead, I look for his latest newsletter, podcast episode, or social media updates on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn, or YouTube. Visiting his website is usually my last resort.
The Digital Shift in Content Consumption
Recently, I attended a webinar focusing on blogging. The speaker emphatically stated, "Blogs are here to stay! When people are curious about you, they search on Google and find your website."
However, that sentiment feels somewhat outdated as of October 2023. A gentle nudge to those creators relying on short, free videos to promote premium courses: it might be time for an update! But that's a topic for another discussion.
In brief: While traditional blogging isn't disappearing, it's certainly taking a back seat as audiences gravitate towards platforms that allow them to read, listen, watch, and engage more seamlessly.
The Impact of ChatGPT on Content Discovery
What makes the speaker's assertion misleading? It's how our search habits have evolved. With tools like ChatGPT, we often turn to it for information instead of spending time on Google.
Initially, we were cautious due to its historical knowledge cut-off in 2021, but as we adapted, it became a regular part of our routine. Now, with ChatGPT-4's integration with Bing search, we have access to real-time information without limitations. Even if we prefer Google for its reliability, it now serves answers directly from search results, diminishing the need to visit individual sites for information.
So, what does this mean for blogs?
The Rise of Newsletters
Everywhere you look, newsletters are gaining popularity. I have two myself—one for my design career, which adds to my marketability, and another for my passion as a writer. If you haven't launched a newsletter yet, it's likely on your mind. Why? Because in 2023, an email list is the most valuable asset for anyone online.
Say Goodbye to Outdated Newsletters
People are no longer visiting your website; they’re searching for your newsletter. But not those old-fashioned newsletters filled with inaccessible content. That’s a thing of the past.
So, what is the new king in the content landscape? The modern, versatile newsletter.
The Advantages of Modern Newsletters
I'm not suggesting you abandon personal blogs entirely. However, it may be wise to shift focus towards building your email list. Here’s why:
- Ownership: You don’t control your social media audience.
- Engagement: Traditional blogs often leave you unaware of your readership.
- Dependency: If platforms like YouTube or Twitter vanish, what remains? Nothing!
Why You Should Build a Modern Newsletter
There are several compelling reasons to invest in modern newsletters over traditional ones. I first discovered this list in Tim Denning's newsletter. Here are some key points:
- Shareability: Newsletters are easy to share, enhancing their reach.
- Discoverability: They appear in spaces where users actively seek content.
- Viral potential: The right content can lead to sudden popularity.
- Simplicity: No coding is required; modern newsletters are user-friendly.
- Multi-functionality: They can double as personal websites or portfolios.
- Relationships: Focus on building a dedicated subscriber base, not just followers.
- Monetization: Many platforms offer built-in monetization options.
Top Platforms for Modern Newsletters
While there are several options, here are a few of my favorites:
- Substack
- Beehiiv
- Ghost
Pro Tip: Regularly export your subscriber list! Personally, I download mine monthly as a precaution. This way, if Substack were to face issues, I could still reach my audience.
Take Action Now!
The newsletter trend isn’t fleeting. If you haven't embraced it yet, now’s the time. There’s no need for daily updates like Seth Godin—find a rhythm that suits you, whether weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, and stick to it! There will be readers eager for your insights.
