Embracing Acceptance: Overcoming the Feeling of Unworthiness
Written on
Chapter 1: The Battle Within
The mind often feels like a battlefield, with thoughts marching in relentless formations. These thoughts bombard us like well-targeted artillery, shattering our inner peace and stirring feelings of inadequacy. We are conscious of the inner turmoil—a desire to compete or the societal pressure to feel “complete.” This leads us to scrutinize ourselves for flaws, both internal and external, as we grapple with feelings of inferiority.
We constantly compare ourselves to others, measuring our worth against their accomplishments, their popularity, and their perceived happiness. The wear and tear of life takes its toll, reminiscent of a slow storm eroding our resolve, while our emotions respond with blind reactions. We resist the very circumstances that seem unfavorable, until we convince ourselves that we are unworthy of joy and fulfillment in this life.
Our defenses are built thick, as we armor ourselves against everything. The haze of unmet expectations clouds our vision, and we become entrenched in a cycle of striving for what we believe we should have. This cycle of regret and anticipation births our suffering, and from this fear, we struggle to find peace.
Instead of resisting, we can choose to embrace what is happening in the present moment with compassion. By acknowledging our entire experience—flaws and all—we can rise to a state of acceptance, transforming our imperfections into a form of art that celebrates life.
Letting go of the struggle, we can affirm: "You are enough." Pause for a moment to breathe deeply. This moment serves as a new beginning. Life is inherently imperfect yet remarkably beautiful, surpassing our wildest imaginations and allowing our hearts to open.
Chapter 2: The Path to Acceptance
The first video titled "Cheryl Wheeler: Unworthy" invites viewers to reflect on the feelings of inadequacy and the journey towards self-acceptance. It provides an emotional exploration of unworthiness and encourages embracing one's true self.
In the second video "Ben Speer - Unworthy [Live]", the live performance resonates with the struggles many face regarding self-worth and highlights the importance of acceptance in overcoming these challenges.
I recently delved into Tara Brach’s insightful book, Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life With the Heart of a Buddha. Her teachings on total acceptance, complemented by Buddhist practices like intentional pauses throughout the day, provide a powerful antidote to our self-imposed narratives of unworthiness. Brach discusses how the non-acceptance of ourselves and our circumstances feeds into the anxiety and fear that plague many in today’s world.
Our cultural narrative often reinforces a sense of unworthiness, echoing the tale of Adam and Eve and the concept of original sin. This narrative suggests that we are fundamentally flawed and, thus, undeserving of happiness and love. It propels us to strive for control over our bodies, emotions, and environments in hopes of overcoming our perceived shortcomings.
Brach also illuminates how we cope with the pain of inadequacy through various strategies: embarking on endless self-improvement journeys, playing it safe to avoid failure, detaching from our present experiences, staying perpetually busy, and harshly criticizing ourselves while focusing on the faults of others.
These patterns may resonate deeply with you, as they did with me. Embracing acceptance encourages us to step out of our mental narratives and confront our reality with kindness, free from judgment. This practice liberates us from the unnecessary suffering we impose on ourselves, guiding us to recognize our intrinsic goodness, wisdom, and compassion—our "Buddha nature."
