Everyone must summon the bravery to be disliked. When you perceive the world through a negative lens and feel that others harbor dislike towards you, resist the urge to take drastic actions, including giving up on life itself.

Reflecting on my own experiences, I recently found myself troubled by work-related issues. Admittedly, I often grapple with social anxiety, both at work and in everyday life. This tendency has caused me to isolate myself in a comforting yet limiting environment. I’ve come to recognize that this is not a healthy approach.

Having spent about two years in my department, I was taken aback when my manager approached me with news of an urgent staffing need in another department. The prospect of leaving my familiar surroundings left me feeling quite disheartened.

As I prepared for the transition over the next couple of days, my spirits were notably low. I couldn’t help but question if I had done something wrong — why was I chosen for this move instead of my colleagues? My thoughts spiraled into a negative view of my surroundings, as I wallowed in self-pity.

Seeking inspiration for personal growth

It wasn’t until today, after finishing work, that I encountered an inspiring article on Medium. It reminded me of the book “The Courage to Be Disliked,” which prompted me to reassess my perspective. I revisited the book and reflected on its teachings.

This leads me to the central theme of today’s discussion: “The Courage to Be Disliked.” Much like philosophical classics such as the Analects and The Republic, this book employs a dialogue format reminiscent of ancient Greek philosophy to explore how individuals can achieve happiness.

The “philosopher” articulates concepts in a straightforward manner, guiding the “youth” on how to improve relationships, find joy, and develop the courage to withstand disapproval from others.

The dialogue unfolds between a perplexed youth and Adler, who represents a voice of wisdom. This format is not only unique but also deeply thought-provoking. Adler, initially a follower of Freud, diverged from Freudian theory to establish Individual Psychology. While Freud posited that our current circumstances stem from past experiences, Adler argued that our happiness and success are determined solely by our own actions and choices.

Maturing involves embracing independence, and this requires the courage to take responsibility for one’s life. Adler emphasizes that the concept of courage is crucial in addressing life’s challenges.

According to Adler, we face three fundamental life tasks: work, friendship, and love. He asserts that interpersonal relationships are the root cause of many of our problems. To navigate these challenges, he introduces the idea of “task separation.”

Understanding task separation for better relationships

By mastering the art of task separation, you can alleviate many of your troubles and pursue happiness more effectively. This leads to transformative changes in your relationships.

But how does one achieve this “task separation”? The key lies in recognizing whose task it truly is. The negativity you encounter is the responsibility of the person delivering it, while your response to that negativity is your own task. In essence, regardless of whether others dislike you, the important thing is to maintain self-acceptance.

The book presents various concepts, but its core message is to actively pursue your happiness. If you are facing professional hurdles or personal challenges, it requires the courage to embrace change. You must also be willing to accept that not everyone will like you.

Through this realization, I understood that seeking approval is not paramount. When faced with negativity, our interpretation of it matters most. Ultimately, the only thing within our control is ourselves. While we may encounter malice, we have the power to diminish its impact.

For me, adapting to a new environment is acceptable. Work is merely a part of life; it shouldn’t dictate my overall well-being. It is essential to continue nurturing other aspects of my life.

With these thoughts in mind, I stepped into the new department feeling anxious yet hopeful, ready to embark on a new chapter of my professional journey.
