Chapter 1: Introduction to the Puzzle
Greetings, everyone! After completing my second-year exams, I’m thrilled to return and share more intriguing math puzzles and my writing with you all.
Today’s challenge is a journey back to high school algebra. Are you ready to uncover the solution? I suggest pausing here, grabbing some pen and paper, and giving it a shot. Once you’re prepared, continue for the answer!
Section 1.1: Understanding the Equation
To begin, our goal is to rearrange the equations into the format y = mx + c, where m represents the slope of the lines.
Since the two lines are perpendicular, their slopes multiply to give -1.
We also know that these lines intersect at the point (-1, 5). Substituting a = b and using x = -1 and y = 5 in our equations will lead us to the next steps.
This results in the following equations:
By solving this system, we find that b = 3 and c = 13. And that’s our solution!
How fascinating is that?
What was your thought process while solving this puzzle? I’d love to hear your insights in the comments below!
