Finding Inspiration in a Summer of Challenges

Chapter 1: A Summer Unlike Any Other
I recently returned to Kyiv after a week-long journey that included two days in Lviv and five in Lublin. This trip was my sole escape for the summer, and now I plan to stay in Kyiv until the season ends, hoping to avoid further travel.
This wasn’t a leisurely getaway; I ventured to Lublin alone for a new visa at the Ukrainian consulate. Initially, I feared I'd encounter more bureaucratic hurdles, but surprisingly, the consul proved to be a compassionate individual, even working late to assist me. His kindness was unexpected.
Now, I face the task of applying for a residency permit once again. After months of trying to extend my last permit only to be denied, I’m determined to make this attempt successful. So, August will be spent finishing what I started back in April.
Reflecting on my experiences, I can confidently declare that the summer of 2023 ranks as the most challenging of my 27 summers. It was a season marred by the turmoil caused by Russian aggressors, air raid sirens, Iranian drones, and missile threats, coupled with the anxieties of job insecurity, financial struggles, unhelpful clerks, and careless lawyers. This summer brought me sleepless nights, mental fatigue, and a host of other unfortunate circumstances.
This summer yielded no rest.
This summer offered no joy.
This summer, I harbor no regrets about its conclusion.
Now that the worst is behind me, I choose to focus on the inspirations that helped me persevere during this otherwise bleak period.
Section 1.1: Embracing Challenges Through Gaming
A significant part of June was spent diving into the expansive world of Hyrule in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While I could list numerous reasons to praise this game, one stands out: it teaches players that every hurdle is surmountable.
Mountains beckon to be climbed.
Lakes challenge us to swim across.
Ceilings invite us to ascend.
And an array of materials can be transformed into vehicles of our creation.
The true magic of this Zelda installment lies in its ability to frame obstacles as opportunities for growth. Unlike Link, we lack a magical artifact in real life, but we possess the power of our minds. Even the toughest challenges can often be resolved with creativity.
Section 1.2: Community Inspiration
During my time in Lublin, I connected with a choreographer named Filip through Grindr. He introduced me to a queer library called Biblioteka Azyl, where I felt an immediate sense of inspiration. Although I didn’t articulate it at the time, the experience resonated deeply with me.
Filip’s dedication to fostering a community in this small Polish town ignited a spark within me. His commitment to curating a diverse collection of queer literature and creating a welcoming atmosphere for all is commendable. It got me thinking—should I consider establishing a similar space in Kyiv? Yet, I wonder if I possess the resilience to face the potential backlash such an initiative might invite.
The responsibility he shoulders at such a young age is truly inspiring, and I’m grateful for the motivation he imparted. I now find myself pondering what change I can initiate in my own life right here and now.
Section 1.3: Simplicity in Storytelling
On a train ride from Lviv to Kyiv, I discovered a game on my Nintendo Switch called Florence. This interactive visual novel about relationships transformed my otherwise mundane journey into a colorful adventure.
Florence has become a source of inspiration this summer, showcasing the power of simplicity and authenticity. In a world filled with grand narratives and elaborate productions, Florence delivers a poignant message through understated visuals and heartfelt storytelling.
Its charm lies in the way it combines simple elements to create a profound narrative. This reminds me that even the most modest creations can leave a lasting impact if they are infused with genuine emotion and meaning. My aspiration is to craft heartfelt stories using the resources at my disposal—words, ideas, and experiences.
Section 1.4: Finding Strength in Togetherness
Typically, people draw inspiration from remarkable feats or extraordinary events. However, my motivation stems from the simplicity of my relationship with my boyfriend. Despite the ongoing war and its emotional toll, we continue to exist and move forward together.
Over the past 1.5 years, we’ve witnessed couples around us falter and friends withdraw, yet we remain steadfast. Our bond may have been tested, but we continue to navigate our challenges together, one step at a time.
While our creative energies have waned due to external pressures, I have faith that they will resurface once we enter a period of peace. For now, we focus on finding inspiration in our shared existence, hoping it will eventually blossom into something beautiful.
