You find yourself wondering, "Will they ever pause for breath? Should I Google them to hint it's time to wrap up?" Attempts to interject are met with another flood of details or a final enticing hook, and just when you think you can excuse yourself, they start scouting for the next audience.

I've experienced both sides of this scenario—being the self-absorbed speaker and being cornered by one. It's a socially awkward habit that often goes unnoticed, especially in cultures outside of America. Today, we’ll explore why some individuals dominate conversations and how to navigate these interactions effectively.

Why Do Individuals Focus on Themselves?

People tend to talk about themselves for various reasons:

  1. Insecurity: They might be trying to project an image of coolness.
  2. Arrogance: They believe their experiences are more valuable than yours.
  3. Attention Seeking: Some crave the spotlight and need to control the conversation's flow.

These tendencies often stem from a lack of self-acceptance, insufficient social experience, or cultural influences.

During a challenging year when I was on a mix of antidepressants and new ADHD medication, I became preoccupied with my own insecurities. I found myself droning on about my life, which ultimately drove some friends away. One courageous friend pointed out that I never bothered to ask about her life.   • Seek Feedback: Invite trusted friends or family to share their thoughts on your conversational style. Be open to their suggestions and willing to adjust your approach.
  • Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices can enhance your awareness of your thoughts and behaviors, leading to more intentional social interactions.

When confronted with someone who monopolizes conversations, it’s important to handle the situation with empathy:

  • Choose an Appropriate Time: Discuss your concerns in a private, calm setting. Public confrontations can lead to embarrassment and defensiveness.
  • Use "I" Statements: Express your feelings from your perspective, such as "I feel overlooked when I can’t share my thoughts," instead of "You never let anyone else speak."
  • Be Compassionate: Recognize that their behavior may stem from insecurity or a lack of awareness. Approach the conversation with kindness rather than criticism.
