Maximizing Educational Value: A Guide to Informal Learning

Chapter 1: The Dilemma of Formal Education
This article reflects on a particular case that highlights the advantages and disadvantages of enrolling in formal educational programs for aspiring entrepreneurs. The inspiration behind this discussion stems from a conversation with one of my mentees, who is actively working on launching her startup while striving to enhance her learning objectives.
A Brief Introduction to Heather
In a previous article titled "How a Female Body Builder Overcame Insomnia," I introduced Heather, an ambitious entrepreneur who has recently launched a biotechnology company focused on genetics and epigenetics. With a keen interest in gene editing and potential cures for genetic disorders, she immerses herself in research. Our discussions are mutually beneficial, as I glean insights about genetics from her extensive knowledge.
Heather reached out to me regarding the necessity of an MBA, following advice from another mentor who suggested it would bolster her credibility in the field. Conflicted and conscious of her limited resources, Heather sought my perspective on this critical decision.
Reflections on Our Conversations
While the recommendation she received has its merits, I offered Heather a different viewpoint. As a mentor, my role is to present various pros and cons, enabling my mentees to make well-informed choices. When she inquired about pursuing an MBA, I shared my personal experiences with higher education, noting that despite my extensive studies—spanning a bachelor's, master's, and doctorate—all funded by scholarships, the return on that investment was minimal.
For instance, had I dedicated those twelve years to a burgeoning field like the internet, I might have achieved success comparable to tech giants like Jeff Bezos or Steve Jobs, who lacked traditional qualifications. My hesitation to embrace risk and entrepreneurial ventures kept me from realizing similar achievements, though I could have potentially amassed a fraction of their wealth.
After completing my formal education, I filed numerous patents, yet the companies I worked for retained ownership. I published many scientific papers without compensation, sharing my expertise for modest fees rather than engaging in lucrative consulting opportunities. I perceive this non-entrepreneurial path not as a failure, but as a valuable lesson—one that Heather found enlightening.
Despite this perspective, Heather's desire for an MBA persisted. She found online programs appealing due to their flexibility and cost-effectiveness, but the $23,000 price tag from a virtual training company remained daunting. For someone burdened with student loans and striving to establish a startup, this figure felt excessive and potentially burdensome.
I encouraged her to evaluate what educational opportunities she could explore with that $23K. Heather embraced the challenge, brainstorming a range of alternatives that included purchasing countless audiobooks and enrolling in various online courses through platforms like Udemy and LinkedIn Learning. She also considered hiring a coach with an MBA to address any gaps in her informal education.
While I recognized her aspiration for an MBA title, I cautioned her that such a designation might be more vanity than value. I emphasized that clients often prioritize substance over credentials; effective communication and problem-solving skills take precedence over titles.
Imagining a highly qualified individual producing convoluted proposals contrasted sharply with a less credentialed person providing clear, practical solutions. The latter would likely attract more clients, underscoring the importance of meaningful contributions over academic accolades.
Heather realized that cost and time are critical factors in committing to formal education. While financial implications often dominate discussions, I posited that time is even more precious—once lost, it cannot be regained. Wise management of one's time can yield financial rewards.
She began to focus on maximizing her time in pursuit of her entrepreneurial aspirations, recognizing its value in the grand scheme of things.
The Value of Informal Education
I am not opposed to formal education; it can be beneficial for those who have the means to pursue it. However, I firmly believe that informal learning, when approached correctly, can yield superior benefits. For individuals like Heather, who do not have the luxury of financial support, the value of informal education became apparent.
After discussing these insights and conversing with peers who had pursued MBAs, Heather ultimately declined the online program in favor of an informal learning approach, leveraging the support of her mentors.
She also emphasized the importance of mental health, addressing her insomnia through improved sleep habits, meditation, and healthy living, which allowed her to maintain balance amid the chaos of entrepreneurship.
Final Thoughts and Takeaways
While formal education may instill discipline and critical thinking, informal learning can be more effective for self-driven individuals. Historically, obtaining knowledge through formal means was challenging; however, the digital age has drastically changed access to information.
Business school can consume valuable time, often forcing students to engage with irrelevant material. Informal education, on the other hand, enables learners to focus on topics that directly align with their career goals, maximizing their time investment.
That said, informal learning requires the same dedication, persistence, and self-discipline as formal education. Those with a passion for their chosen field often find intrinsic motivation that surpasses any external encouragement provided by traditional institutions.
I admire the newer generations for taking responsibility for their learning and career paths, utilizing technology to propel their ambitions.
To illustrate the importance of skill development, I shared an article titled "If I Had Another Chance to Live in the Modern World, I'd Reinvest in Five Skills." In it, I explore how mastering specific skills has shaped my personal and professional life. Heather is now honing these skills through informal learning, primarily through practical application.
