Facing the Keyboard Warriors

In my journey as an adult learner, I unexpectedly became a victim of cyberbullying after posting a simple question on X. As I strive to become a software developer, I often share my inquiries on the platform. Until recently, my time on X had been largely positive. However, one post, which discussed the complexities of polymorphism and inheritance in object-oriented programming, unexpectedly went viral, racking up 121,000 impressions and 277 comments, the majority of which were harshly critical.

Programming is undeniably challenging, with certain concepts proving particularly difficult to understand. Despite this, my learning journey has been rewarding, especially since I joined X about six months ago and connected with supportive individuals.

I have always been the kind of person who isn't afraid to ask questions, regardless of the risk of appearing uninformed. Throughout my life, I've received praise for expressing the queries that many people keep to themselves. I value clarity over pretending to know something just to appear knowledgeable.

Why am I sharing this experience? It's not just to express frustration or seek sympathy. Bullying has been a recurring issue in various aspects of my life, including family, friends, and educational environments. Normally, I can brush off negative comments from one or two people. However, being attacked by over a hundred individuals at once left me feeling overwhelmed and questioning my path: Am I doing this right? Am I smart enough? Should I just quit?

Thankfully, my friends rallied around me, reminding me to keep asking questions. I did take a short break from X to regain my strength. If someone like me, who has faced bullying before, can feel so shaken, I can only imagine how profoundly it affects today's youth navigating social media. I consider myself fortunate to belong to Generation X; I can't fathom how I would have coped with cyberbullying during my formative years.

While I usually don't dwell on these issues since I don't have children, it pains me to think about how deeply cyberbullying can affect today's youth, sometimes even leading to tragic outcomes. The heart of my message is that X isn't solely a youth-driven platform; it is largely filled with adults capable of extraordinary cruelty over trivial matters like a simple question.

I've encountered various justifications from these adults, from claims of trolling to seeking attention. Yet, these rationalizations for their cruel behavior are weak at best.

If adults can act in such a manner, it's no surprise that children might emulate this behavior. It's easy to hide behind a screen and unleash negativity without considering the consequences. Think about it: If you can behave this way, what if someone is treating your child similarly, and they are suffering in silence? We must recognize the serious implications of such actions.

Despite the advantages that social media offers, it also reveals the darker sides of human nature. We all have the potential to act better. It could be as simple as ignoring content we dislike or blocking people with harmful intentions. Wouldn't that be preferable to indulging in cruelty for its own sake?

Ultimately, it's up to each of us to make the right choice. I urge you to reflect before giving in to the temptation of being unkind.
