“A woman simply is, but a man must become.”
— Camille Paglia
This quote highlights a significant contrast in perspectives. As society evolves, women are advancing, and men must also elevate themselves. While some individuals have begun making strides in their personal growth, one might question whether simply listening to podcasts or engaging in activities like cold showers is truly beneficial.
Section 1.1: Common Self-Improvement Strategies
Numerous self-help strategies exist to assist individuals in becoming the best versions of themselves. Here are some popular ones:
- Meditate
- Set clear goals
- Practice gratitude
- Foster a growth mindset
- Increase reading habits
- Prioritize sleep
- Take cold showers
- Exercise regularly
- Stay hydrated
- Step outside of your comfort zone
Most of us have experienced periods where we've earnestly pursued these tips, and many of us are quite familiar with them. Undoubtedly, they can enhance certain aspects of our lives. However, after consuming a plethora of self-help content, I've noticed a critical piece of advice often overlooked, which I will share in this article.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Core Aim of Self-Help
The primary focus of the self-help industry is often centered on the individual. It's about what you should do to overcome challenges, with the underlying message suggesting that a successful man is one who engages in various activities. This perception can lead men to engage in self-help sporadically, often reverting to previous habits after a short while.
Section 1.2: The Importance of a Greater Purpose
If I were to suggest that you need more sleep to improve your life, you might only commit to this for a few weeks. However, if I framed it as a necessity for having the energy to assist a family member, your commitment would likely deepen.
The same principle applies to working out; if your motivation stems from wanting to inspire a loved one, you may find yourself sticking to it far longer than if the drive were solely for personal enhancement.
Chapter 2: Shifting Your Focus in Self-Help
In the video "8 Rules For Men: Full Self-Improvement Guide 2023," valuable insights are shared on how men can approach self-improvement effectively.
The need for improvement is commendable, especially in a society that often undermines such endeavors. However, it's vital to recognize that the desire to better oneself for loved ones can outweigh the motivation to improve solely for personal reasons.
If your goal is to enhance your health, establish a business, or simply be more active, anchoring your motivations to a cause beyond yourself will sustain your commitment even in challenging times.
The second video, "The Self Improvement Crisis: A Generation Of Lost Men," discusses the struggles men face in today's self-improvement landscape.
Your journey toward self-improvement can be daunting, but I hope you ultimately find your path and fulfill your aspirations. As a man in my 30s starting an online business, I urge you to identify a strong "Why" that can act as your guiding star. This purpose must be robust enough to support you through the inevitable trials you will encounter.
While the self-help industry will persist, you can only derive true benefits if you approach it with the right intentions. It may be termed self-help, but without the intent to extend help to those around you, true self-improvement becomes elusive.
