Overcoming Depression: A Personal Journey and Insights

Chapter 1: Embracing My Sensitivity
Receiving a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder initially felt disheartening. However, I have come to view my sensitivity as a unique strength rather than a weakness.
How to Manage Stress and Depression: Effective Strategies
Growing up in a home where I often had to emotionally support my parents made me feel like I’ve truly earned the title of an anxious-depressive. Yet, I consciously avoid letting this label define me, recognizing that it represents only a small part of my identity. Instead, I strive to be aware of the underlying emotions that occasionally surface beneath my outwardly cheerful demeanor. This self-awareness reminds me to prioritize my well-being, especially when I find myself prioritizing others over myself.
At times, I visualize my depression as a gloomy, black puppy that comes to visit. He moves slowly, like Eeyore, with his head low and eyes drooping. His gaze resembles that of a sad bloodhound, and his occasional howls remind me of the heartbreak I feel when a cherished item is broken. It’s comforting to remember that this puppy is merely a temporary guest in my life, not the entirety of who I am. I am so much more than my struggles.

Moving forward and taking the next appropriate step is what often keeps me motivated. I understand that I don’t need to have all the answers or know what lies ahead. I possess an abundance of inner wisdom and have numerous resources available if I can set aside my pride and seek assistance. Recognizing that humans are social beings who thrive on genuine connections is crucial; not everyone intends to harm or judge me. If they do, I can remind myself that their actions are not a reflection of my worth.
Maintaining a balanced diet and engaging in physical activity are essential for improving my mood. I make an effort to avoid gluten and dairy, which seems to benefit my digestion. With the guidance of a Naturopathic Doctor, I underwent a three-month elimination diet that significantly enhanced my overall well-being. I lost some weight, my skin improved, and I experienced increased energy levels. While it’s challenging, adhering to a healthier diet is worthwhile.
During depressive episodes, I often isolate myself, mistakenly believing solitude is beneficial. Sometimes, it’s necessary to embrace this isolation, allowing myself the time for Deep Rest. I resonate with Jim Carrey's perspective on depression:
“Depression is your body saying 'enough, I don’t want to play this role anymore. I am tired of maintaining this façade.'”
This reminds me that the antidote to depression is expression. I seek outlets for my energy to prevent stagnation, as I have gifts that the world deserves to see—and so do you. Engaging in activities that promote expression and connection often helps me break free from my ruts.
I find expression in my running stride, through the melodies I sing along to, in my fashion choices, the artistry of my makeup application, the rhythm of my typing, and in the cathartic screams when life's pressures become overwhelming. Connection manifests in my awareness of breathing and in making eye contact with others who seek genuine recognition. Nature also serves as a reminder of life’s beauty and our interconnectedness.
Chapter 2: The Power of Therapy
As I pursue a career in counseling, I firmly believe in the transformative potential of psychotherapy. My experiences with therapists and psychologists have provided me with invaluable insights. Many people hesitate to seek therapy due to fear of confronting uncomfortable truths, but therapy is also a space to discover and celebrate one’s strengths.
Rest assured, you are more likely to uncover positive aspects of yourself than negative ones.
