Chapter 1: The Struggle Against Procrastination

In life, nothing is guaranteed except the dedication you invest in your pursuits.

Overcoming procrastination through discipline and effort

As I begin to write this piece, I find myself feeling drained. I spend six days a week at the gym, and on my three days off, I’m out pounding the pavement. I participate in 5k runs around my neighborhood when I’m not busy in the kitchen.

Today, however, was particularly challenging. The last thing I wanted was to lace up my CloudMonsters and hit the pavement. The inner voice in my head tempted me to stay home, break my fast, and indulge in a combo platter from the local taqueria — after a meal, it’s easier to walk longer and burn more calories.

Yet, running isn’t just about that for me; it symbolizes tackling difficult challenges. Pushing my body through city streets or country roads isn’t something for those who seek comfort. Embracing tough tasks may be daunting, but it cultivates discipline and reaps rewards.

The Challenge of Beginning

Our initial perceptions of the tasks ahead can often deter us from even attempting them. We may instinctively believe that the workload is overwhelming, leading to fears of failure and, by extension, feelings of inadequacy.

This phenomenon is what psychologists refer to as catastrophizing. Over the years, I've learned that these intrusive thoughts are often exaggerated. My tendency to catastrophize situations others might dismiss allows me to recognize these thoughts as they arise.

By observing others, I see how they navigate similar hurdles. Witnessing their perseverance inspires me. I find that merely initiating a task can be the most daunting part:

  • Starting an article — especially the introduction!
  • Heading to the gym after a long workday.
  • Going for a run.

Interestingly, I’ve realized that once I begin any challenging endeavor, it tends to become easier as I go. Breaking free from the chains of catastrophizing allows momentum to carry me forward, although immediate ease should not be expected.

Discipline vs. Motivation

A common debate among creatives and productivity enthusiasts revolves around which factor is more effective in accomplishing tasks: discipline or motivation. Often, discipline emerges as the victor in these discussions.

Discipline represents a steadfast approach to completing tasks, rooted in habitual action and a reliance on one’s own willpower. It involves a conscious commitment to act, regardless of how one feels — there are tasks that simply need to be done, now and without delay.

Conversely, motivation is a transient emotion that ebbs and flows. It's akin to consuming several shots of espresso: an initial burst of energy that gradually fades, ultimately leading to a crash.

Engaging in difficult tasks necessitates cultivating a discipline that embraces discomfort. This may involve:

  • Acknowledging responsibility for a past mistake.
  • Beginning a monotonous but essential task.
  • Initiating a project or activity that feels particularly unappealing.

However, through the repeated execution of these challenging tasks, you foster discipline. Sticking with something that brings discomfort ultimately leads to personal growth. As Jocko Willink articulates, “Discipline equals freedom.”

Understanding discipline as a pathway to freedom is a lesson I’ve been learning recently.

Here’s What I Learned in My First Month Back on Medium

Everyone requires a creative outlet and constructive feedback to enhance their skills.

Cultivating discipline is a far more dependable strategy for achieving what you desire in life. Each day, you improve a little more, pushing yourself to reach higher levels.

The Rewards of Effort

That’s the reason I dedicate myself to improving day after day. I wouldn’t classify myself as an exceptional runner; rather, I’m at a fairly average level. But that’s irrelevant. The focus lies in whether I am better than I was yesterday. Haruki Murakami aptly states, “In long-distance running, the only opponent you have to defeat is yourself, the way you used to be.”

Engaging in difficult tasks is inherently challenging. You don’t need me to remind you to tackle that daunting task you’ve been avoiding.

The essence of this message is that if your goals appear too monumental to even begin pursuing, take the first step.

  • If you aim to start running, try going for a simple walk.
  • If you wish to write, purchase a journal and jot down your thoughts for yourself.

By merely initiating your task, you have already overcome a significant hurdle on your path to achieving your goals.

Momentum will ease your journey, and you will improve over time. It’s not about outperforming others; it’s about being better than who you were yesterday.
