Overcoming Procrastination: 7 Practical Strategies to Get Started

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding Procrastination

If you find yourself grappling with procrastination, it’s important not to be too hard on yourself. Our environment is filled with distractions—ranging from constant emails and social media alerts to telemarketing calls—that continuously pull our attention away from our personal tasks and aspirations.

Currently, there’s an ongoing conversation regarding "hustle culture"—whether it’s a motivating force or a detrimental influence on mental health. It’s interesting to see how many so-called motivational experts have altered their views as mental health advocates challenge their perspectives. Nevertheless, even those who embody a hustle mentality still face the challenge of procrastination. The process of acquiring new skills can be lengthy and often requires investment in the right resources, which can feel daunting. This sense of overwhelm frequently results in procrastination and can ultimately lead to burnout. Furthermore, many of these endeavors are pursued in solitude, which can contribute to feelings of isolation and, in some cases, depression.

Instead of overwhelming yourself with multiple projects and a cacophony of voices, consider streamlining your focus on your genuine objectives.

In the Stage 32 Writers’ Room, our community of creatives convenes weekly, both online and live (without the interruptions of YouTube ads), to discuss their monthly goals and the incremental steps they’re taking to achieve them. By collaborating in a community of like-minded individuals, feelings of isolation dissipate, sharing becomes a safe space, and support and inspiration flourish. This creates a real, tangible experience that combats procrastination.

However, even those in the Writers’ Room and on Stage 32 are not immune to procrastination; it is a human tendency. The key to overcoming a negative habit and fostering a new one lies in developing a structured plan, acting on that plan, and consistently repeating those actions until desired results are achieved.

Chapter 2: Seven Steps to Conquer Procrastination

1. Clarify Your Purpose

The first step in combating procrastination is to clarify your intentions. What is your main objective, and why is it important to you? Understanding the significance of your goal will help you maintain focus.

If your emotional connection to your goals is weak, it’s easy to drift away from them, leading to procrastination instead of productive action.

Goal Setting Process

2. Establish Deadlines

Once you’ve identified your purpose, set a deadline for your goals. Be compassionate yet realistic with yourself. Just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, your main objective won’t be achieved instantly. Create a timeline that feels achievable, and commit to working towards it daily.

This approach not only enhances your focus but also helps you enjoy the journey as you progress towards your deadline.

3. Break Down Your Goals

Now that you have a clear goal, break it into manageable steps. Create a detailed list of actions required to accomplish your objective. The smaller the tasks, the less overwhelming they will seem.

For instance, if your aim is to run a mile but you’re starting from scratch, don’t jump straight into running a mile. Instead, begin by simply putting on your running shoes and walking for 5–10 minutes at a scheduled time.

Make a list of small tasks to tackle each day, and spread them out over the week or month. This incremental approach will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Task Management Techniques

4. Utilize Focus Tools

If you struggle to concentrate, consider using tools like the “Focus” feature on your devices to minimize distractions from social media and online browsing. A popular technique is the Pomodoro method, which involves working for 25 minutes without distractions, followed by a 5-minute break. After four cycles, take a longer break of 15–30 minutes before starting again.

This method not only helps eliminate distractions but also fosters discipline.

5. Hold Yourself Accountable

Regularly reviewing your progress is crucial. According to productivity expert Brian Moran, consistently completing at least 80% of your tasks will generally lead you to achieve your goals. If you find yourself falling short, it may be time to reassess the tasks you’re choosing or the feasibility of your daily goals.

6. Seek Community Support

Finding accountability partners within a community of passionate individuals can significantly enhance your motivation and reduce procrastination. Engaging with others who share your interests allows for constructive feedback and encouragement.

Regular check-ins with these individuals can create a supportive environment where everyone thrives. Members of the Stage 32 Writers’ Room often cite these accountability sessions as a key benefit to their creative journeys.

7. Choose the Right Social Media

Participating in broad social media platforms may expose you to a wide range of interests, which can be distracting. Alternatively, niche platforms allow you to connect with individuals who share your passions, leading to deeper connections and supportive relationships.

When I founded Stage 32 in 2011, one of the core principles was to foster a friendly environment free from negativity. This focus on positive interactions is why Stage 32 has gained recognition as a supportive community within the entertainment industry.

In conclusion, social media can serve as a powerful tool in overcoming procrastination if used wisely. Be honest about the value you derive from your online presence. If it’s primarily a time-waster, consider shifting to niche platforms where you can find your tribe, receive support, and build the habits necessary to achieve your goals.
