The Reality Behind Overnight Success: A Writer's Journey

Chapter 1: The Myth of Instant Success
I don't know about you, but the constant stream of overnight success tales, shortcuts, and hacks for rapidly achieving thousands of views and profits online has become exhausting. It often feels as if everyone else has struck gold, while I'm left feeling like I missed the jackpot by a hair.
Reflecting on my own path, I recognize that I've made significant strides since I began writing online a year and a half ago. I've cultivated a robust community, published several books, launched my newsletter, and gained valuable confidence as a writer.
From an outsider's perspective, my journey may appear to be a glamorous success story. Yet, the reality is a strenuous path filled with countless hours spent alone at the keyboard and numerous stories that never see the light of day, ending up in a digital abyss or lingering in my drafts.
What you perceive: I've amassed a following of over 5,000 on Medium in a relatively brief time, and some of my most successful articles have received enthusiastic praise, albeit with modest rewards.
What remains unseen: I have penned 560 articles, painstakingly constructing my presence piece by piece. Many of these narratives demanded hours of labor but were forgotten in mere minutes. The Pareto principle has been relentless for me, with only about 10% of my work generating 80% of my outcomes and income. The aspiration of making a living from my writing still feels distant. Sigh...
“Is this effort truly worthwhile?”
On challenging days, I struggle with writer’s block and confront those nagging doubts. In those moments, I take a step back to reconnect with my purpose and motivations: to inspire others through my writing, foster a community, and transform my passion into a sustainable career. Acting as your own coach and unwavering supporter can be mentally draining, but it’s essential to be your own greatest advocate.
Then, I remind myself that there’s no place I would rather be than right here, engaging in what I love, irrespective of the results.
Every article contributes to your growth as a writer.
As a writer, it's crucial to maintain your creative spirit. You will encounter periods of doubt, insecurity, and darkness, especially when those around you seem to be thriving—or claim to be.
Take a moment to step back, acknowledge your progress, and appreciate the journey.
You cannot fail if you continue to pursue your passion, but you will falter if you cease to love what you do.
Instead of striving to become an overnight success, focus on crafting a narrative that unfolds over countless nights.
