6 Effective Strategies to Overcome Mid-Day Brain Fog

Understanding Mid-Day Brain Fog
As someone grappling with mid-day brain fog, I feel compelled to share my experiences, hoping others might resonate with my struggles. This morning, I was quite productive—definitely a morning person—but as the day progressed, my energy began to dip. While I usually manage to stay at least somewhat productive during this slump, there are days when it feels nearly impossible to think clearly.
The brain fog I experienced today stemmed from overstimulation. Juggling tasks like writing emails, responding to Teams messages, handling a demanding kitten, dodging spam calls, and trying to watch a YouTube video felt overwhelming—almost like a small explosion in my mind.
During my lunch break, I needed to retreat from the chaos, shutting the blinds and burying my head in my sweater to regain my composure. I understand that my job can be hectic at times, but what really derails my focus is getting interrupted mid-task. For instance, while I was striving to maintain a professional tone in an email, a Teams notification distracted me, forcing me to shift my focus and then attempt to re-enter the mindset needed for my original task.
Navigating the nuances of autistic code-switching can be particularly exhausting, making it even harder to maintain concentration in the afternoon when I have to adjust my tone for different communications. Although pushing myself to be productive can be draining, here are some strategies that might help ease those difficult afternoons, like the one I'm currently experiencing.
Take a Break from the Screen
Give yourself the freedom to step away from your computer. Staring at a screen all day can be exhausting, so I make it a point to walk away during my lunch breaks or at random intervals throughout the day.
Gaze Out the Window
One of my favorite distractions is to look out my window and try to catch people running red lights at the nearby intersection. While it might not be the safest game, witnessing such rule-breaking behavior is often quite astonishing.
Enjoy Some Pet Time
Taking a few minutes to cuddle with a pet (or even a plushie or a cozy blanket if you don't have one) can be rejuvenating. The softness of my kitten’s fur often brings me back to a more centered state, similar to a calming form of stimming.
Watch a Video
When I realize that productivity is out of reach, I turn to YouTube for a break. Watching funny, inspiring, or calming content helps me recharge instead of forcing myself to work, which usually leads to frustration.
Get Moving
Recently, I discovered a new way to release energy—shaking in my chair like an excited dog! Whether it’s this new stim or taking a quick dash around the apartment, moving around helps get my blood flowing. Alternatively, a quick gym session or an in-home workout can also do wonders.
Journal Your Thoughts
I’ve found that journaling can be incredibly helpful for clearing my mind. Whether I'm reflecting on my day, planning ahead, or adding books to my reading list, writing allows me to reset my brain after a period of overstimulation.
