While there are many terrifying elements in the cosmos—from colossal solar flares to cosmic ray bursts and asteroids hurtling towards Earth—why not take this season to reflect on the truly frightful aspects of the Universe?

#5: The Ghost Nebula
The Ghost Nebula, discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2018, is located in the Constellation Cassiopeia, a mere 550 light-years from Earth. Its wispy strands of gas and dust evoke images straight from nightmares.
To me, this nebula closely resembles The Oogie Boogie Man from Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, making it all the more unsettling.
#4: A Ringwraith Among the Stars
The nebula IRAS 05437+2502, spotted by Hubble in 2010, bears a striking similarity to the Nazguls from The Lord of the Rings. First identified in 1983 by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), little is known about this dark stellar nursery.
NASA notes that the interaction between a high-velocity young star and a surrounding gas cloud may have caused the sharp-edged bright arc visible. I can’t help but feel that this star is fleeing from the ringwraith!
#3: The Corpse Rising from Its Grave
NGC 1999, resembling a corpse emerging from its grave, is one of the more haunting celestial sights. Illuminated by a young star named V380 Orionis, this nebula hints at the possibility of a zombie apocalypse.
The Hubble team explains that this bright star has a surface temperature nearly double that of our Sun, surrounded by a cloud of remnants from its formation. Are we ready for the undead to rise?
