The Unbridgeable Divide: Understanding Atheists and Theists

Chapter 1: The Divergence of Belief
In recent discussions on faith and skepticism, I authored a response titled The Faith of Militant Atheism to counter Benjamin Cain's piece, The Feebleness of the Backyard Church's Argument for Theism, which was a rebuttal to Dan Foster's views. In my writing, I argued that individuals like Cain could benefit from a touch of humility in their discussions about the divine. After all, no one can assert absolute certainty regarding anything beyond our tangible reality.
At the heart of the disagreement between atheists and theists lies their differing perceptions of what constitutes "valid evidence."
Section 1.1: Science vs. Faith
Atheists, including Cain, often invoke scientific discoveries to challenge theistic and spiritual beliefs. They argue, "Consider all that we understand about the universe's origins, the evolution of species, quantum mechanics, climate dynamics, and the germs that pre-scientific societies attributed to divine intervention."
However, it is essential to recognize that science does not engage with questions concerning the divine. Science focuses on the natural and testable realm, addressing "what" and "how," but not "why."
To be fair, some religious individuals outright reject established scientific principles and attempt to refute substantial evidence regarding the Big Bang, dinosaurs, and evolution, while others indulge in irrational beliefs.
Yet, many believers reconcile scientific findings with their faith. They do not hold a literal interpretation of sacred texts like Genesis; rather, their belief stems from personal experiences of the divine and their awe at the intricate details of creation.
Subsection 1.1.1: Personal Experience and Divine Presence
Section 1.2: Different Standards of Evidence
As Cain describes, physicists attribute the cause of the Big Bang to a "fluctuation in quantum chaos somehow existing outside of space and time." According to Philip Rolnick in Origins, scientists have yet to comprehend the first moments of the universe’s expansion.
Regardless of interpretation, the existence of something for no discernible reason or purpose remains a mystery. Perhaps it was merely mindless particles, or perhaps it was a divine creator. We simply do not know.
When Cain learns of the physicists' theory, he concludes, "See, there is no Creator." In contrast, I perceive this "fluctuation" as evidence of a Creator, marveling at the universe's complexity.
To illustrate the point further, consider the "fine-tuning" of gravity, which is so precise that a slight variation in its strength could have prevented the universe from forming as we know it. This leads me to conclude that I lack the faith to believe such precision was merely a coincidence.
Chapter 2: The Nature of Evidence
The first video, Why Theists Can't Convert Atheists - YouTube, explores the challenges faced by believers in persuading skeptics.
Atheists and theists will continue to disagree because they assess evidence through fundamentally different lenses. For instance, a believer’s subjective experience of the Holy Spirit is often dismissed by atheists as mere neural activity.
This disparity in interpretation extends to the universe's fine-tuning, which atheists regard as random chance, rejecting any notion of a Creator influencing events "outside of space and time."
The second video, Why Atheists Can't Blame Christians for Anything - YouTube, discusses the responsibility of religious individuals in broader societal conflicts.
In conclusion, no one ever converts to Christianity solely based on winning a debate about the existence of God. My intention is not to persuade anyone to adopt Christianity, but rather to encourage believers to recognize the validity of their experiences.
Ultimately, while atheists and believers may never find common ground, it is essential for the latter to extend love and acceptance, offering solace to those who have suffered due to organized religion. What better testament to God's existence than to manifest His Kingdom on Earth?
