Embracing Authenticity

The fundamental human need to express one's authentic self is often described as a journey toward authenticity. Throughout life, individuals adopt various roles—be it as a student, partner, parent, employee, or mentor. However, history indicates a persistent need for the liberty to reveal one’s true self.

The true self is frequently associated with a person's moral compass or essence. While interpretations may vary among scholars and psychologists, a common belief persists: individuals possess both a public persona and an authentic self. Achieving harmony between these two aspects is recognized as self-actualization, which represents the pinnacle of human needs.

Self-actualization encompasses living fully, pursuing knowledge, and embodying your destined identity.

Section 1.1: The Historical Context of Self-Actualization

Ancient civilizations held a belief in an everlasting soul, often urging individuals to realize their soul's potential and embody their true selves. For example, the Ancient Egyptians viewed only Pharaohs as having a soul during their earthly existence, while others were thought to gain a soul only after death. The affluent were buried with valuables intended for their soul's journey in the afterlife.

The Greek philosopher Socrates described an inner voice guiding him in distinguishing right from wrong, a concept that modern society would now identify as conscience. However, during Socrates’s time, religious authorities believed this inner voice to be either divine or demonic, suggesting he had deviated from their teachings.

The Roman Emperor Augustus contributed to the notion of self-awareness by penning the first documented autobiography, which highlighted that individuals are shaped by their experiences and perspectives throughout life. In Judeo-Christian beliefs, it is thought that every person possesses a soul reflecting their original, perfect state.

Historical Understanding of Self

In the early 20th century, philosopher Immanuel Kant proposed that true self-awareness is achieved when an individual is autonomous, free, and acts rationally. This idea was further developed by Abraham Maslow, who introduced the Hierarchy of Needs theory. According to Maslow, individuals must satisfy fundamental human needs before they can pursue self-actualization and gain insight into their true selves.

Finding Freedom to Be Your True Self

Maslow asserted that people must first fulfill their basic needs—such as food, shelter, and safety—before they can focus on their social and emotional needs. For instance, a person experiencing homelessness and hunger is unlikely to contemplate personal growth or self-discovery; their immediate physical needs take precedence.

In societies that successfully address the foundational needs of their citizens, there is an opportunity for individuals to learn, grow, and attain self-actualization. Once these basic requirements are met, you can begin to explore the freedom to express your true self through:

  1. Conducting a Personal Inventory: Assess what excites you and what your passions are.
  2. Practicing Mindfulness: Stay present to reduce anxieties about the past or future.
  3. Building a Support Network: Having trustworthy individuals around you contributes to your journey of self-actualization.
  4. Cultivating Intrinsic Motivation: Understanding your true self allows you to identify what you want and the means to attain it.

In educational environments, students are encouraged to explore various subjects. Openness to new experiences can lead to greater self-discovery. When pursuing authenticity, taking stock of your interests and passions is essential for personal growth.
