Title: Deepening Literary Connections: A Catfish Friend Review Series
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to the Series
Welcome to this exciting book review series designed to enrich your reading experience. I've often found myself ensnared by the pressure of reading a specific number of books each year. While this approach may provide a broad selection, it often lacks depth. This series aims to infuse layers of meaning and authenticity into the recommended reads.
Some of the books I’ll discuss come from friends and acquaintances, while others have compelled me to explore further, even when the journey was challenging—here’s a nod to Haruki Murakami! Expect a diverse array of genres, including novels, self-help, short stories, and nonfiction, each connected to personal experiences that will shape my reviews. Perhaps you’ll see a take on "The Count of Monte Cristo" or a look at the intriguingly niche "The Honorable Obscurity Handbook."
The inspiration for this series comes from one of my favorite poems, "Your Catfish Friend," featured in "The Art of Angling: Poems About Fishing," edited by the wonderful Henry Hughes. I had the privilege of hosting a reading and discussion with him, which only deepened my appreciation for this work. The poem has consistently broadened my perspective on life:
Richard Brautigan: “Your Catfish Friend”
If I were to live my life
in catfish forms
in scaffolds of skin and whiskers
at the bottom of a pond
and you were to come by
one evening
when the moon was shining
down into my dark home
and stand there at the edge
of my affection
and think, “It’s beautiful
here by this pond. I wish
somebody loved me,”
I’d love you and be your catfish
friend and drive such lonely
thoughts from your mind
and suddenly you would be
at peace,
and ask yourself, “I wonder
if there are any catfish
in this pond? It seems like
a perfect place for them.”
You can jump right into the Catfish series with a review of Murakami’s short stories here or explore the lighthearted review of Joshua Samuel Brown’s travel diary, which chronicles the journey of the author of "Don Quixote" through Spain. Exciting reads await just over the horizon!
