At the onset of the pandemic, I decided to disconnect my work email from my mobile device. It quickly became clear that traditional work hours were obsolete; the pandemic's harsh realities urged me to establish stronger boundaries between my work and personal life. This new approach proved beneficial. I found myself experiencing less anxiety when I was away from my home office, which had been relocated to a hallway in my house. Surprisingly, my career did not suffer.

The relief from constant work-related notifications lifted my spirits during a time when our freedoms felt heavily restricted. As the monotony of lockdowns set in, I began to reflect on the value of my time. I questioned why I was dedicating so much of my life to a job that merely enriched a corporation, rather than nurturing my own passions and interests, such as writing.

I’m fortunate to have significant flexibility in my work schedule. Despite the legal profession's reputation for being rigid, I work at a firm that allows me to set my own hours as long as my responsibilities are met. This freedom prompted me to experiment further: what if I took Fridays off?

In September 2020, without announcing my intentions or seeking approval, I discreetly marked Fridays as unavailable on my calendar indefinitely. My work hours shifted from the traditional 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM from Monday to Thursday to a 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM schedule. This adjustment enabled me to fulfill my obligations while also preserving family time. Fridays became a day for sleeping in, exercising, completing household tasks, and dedicating time to my writing.

What did my employer and clients think? Interestingly, no one seemed to notice. Occasionally, urgent matters required attention on a Friday, and I would oblige, but generally, there were no adverse reactions. Even after 18 months, this pattern has continued. Here’s what I discovered:

My productivity saw a significant boost. During my first year of the four-day workweek, every metric of my productivity improved compared to the previous year. The challenge of fitting five days' worth of work into four encouraged me to minimize time spent on trivial conversations, social media distractions, and other time-wasting activities. I became more organized and efficient in my work approach.

I also experienced enhanced job satisfaction. I now feel more content in my career and approach each workweek with renewed energy. Having an extra day for personal and family time has alleviated some stress associated with working during a pandemic, mitigating burnout that many have faced in various sectors recently. Happier employees lead to increased productivity and longer tenure with their companies.

My experience reflects broader trends. Iceland's trials of a four-day workweek over several years revealed reduced stress and burnout among employees without a loss in productivity. In the U.S., the push for a shorter workweek is gaining momentum, with companies like Kickstarter already adopting this model.

The workplace has transformed significantly since early 2020. Ongoing discussions are centered on whether companies should revert to full office settings, maintain remote work, or adopt hybrid models. The Great Resignation has seen many leaving their jobs, and labor shortages coupled with economic challenges cast uncertainty on our economic future. For employers seeking to cultivate a happier and more productive workforce, it may be time to consider a reduction in the conventional workweek, fostering positive changes in the workplace.
