Harnessing Emotional Resilience: My Unique Strength Training Approach

Understanding Resistance
Have you ever attempted to change a habit only to feel like you're battling an unseen force? This sensation is what we call resistance, subtly complicating our efforts to discard outdated behaviors. The challenge lies in bridging the gap between who we were and who we aspire to become, a chasm that can sometimes feel as vast as the Grand Canyon. However, we can traverse this divide with a blend of humor and compassion.
Our habits often stem from past experiences that helped us navigate strong emotions. It makes sense — we all have our motivations. Yet, now may be the ideal moment to contemplate the person we wish to be and the feelings we want to cultivate.
Self-Reflection and Intuition
After a hectic week, I often find myself having a chat with my inner voice, urging me to indulge a bit: “You’ve had a busy week, treat yourself. It’s okay if you….” Sound familiar?
That inner voice is trying to comfort me after a challenging week. However, I've realized my intuition always knows what’s best for me. It acts as my heart's guiding system, my internal GPS steering me toward a brighter future. When aligned with my inner guidance, I feel confident in my decisions. If my intuition doesn’t exclaim “Absolutely!” it usually means “No.”
Disconnection from this guidance can occur when I'm fatigued, stressed, or hungry, making it harder to choose what truly benefits me.
Emotional Resistance Training
When faced with tough decisions, my version of resistance training comes into play. I’m not talking about lifting weights; rather, I’m referring to my emotional resilience practice that helps me confront life’s challenges.
During moments of temptation to cling to familiar habits, I engage in mindfulness. I take a moment to pause, breathe, and reconnect with my heart. Then, I ask myself, “What does my future self desire? How do I want to feel in the days or weeks ahead?”
For years, I have chosen to lead a healthier lifestyle, yet I still encounter resistance when attempting to shed some of my old comfort habits. For instance, turning down a glass of wine remains a challenge. My body no longer tolerates alcohol well, yet my inner GPS continues to redirect me towards healthier choices.
There are moments when indulging seems fine, especially during vacations or dinners with friends. However, when my body signals ‘No’ due to an upcoming tennis match or writing deadlines, it’s crucial to listen.
The Balance of Choices
Will I feel okay after indulging? Probably. Can I perform my best in a tennis match afterward? That’s less certain. Overindulgence might hinder my focus or energy, affecting both my content creation and performance on the court.
An ancient Buddhist proverb states, “Pain is inevitable; suffering is optional,” reminding us of our ability to decide how we respond to life's challenges.
Mindfulness enables us to identify and manage the resistance that may impede our self-improvement and brighter future.
