# How I Successfully Launched an NFT Collection Without Prior Experience
Written on
Chapter 1: Diving into the NFT World
Are you eager to explore the world of NFTs but don't know where to start? You're in the right place.
This Halloween, I am thrilled to announce the launch of my inaugural NFT collection. The twist? I’m not an artist, developer, or a Web3 expert. I’m just an everyday individual who recognized a unique opportunity and thought, "Why not give it a shot?"
While my journey proved rewarding, it was fraught with challenges. I experienced a steep learning curve throughout the process. This article outlines my journey from mere curiosity to the pride of showcasing my creations!
Essentially, I am living proof that anyone can embark on this journey. The purpose of this article is to share my comprehensive process, so you can follow suit.
If you are completely new to NFTs, digital wallets, and Web3, numerous resources exist to guide you. My focus here will be on diving into the experience, no prior knowledge required.
Now, let's get started!
Section 1.1: Choosing Between Art and Utility
To begin, it's crucial to determine whether your NFT will be utility-focused or art-focused. In utility NFTs, functionality takes precedence over aesthetic appeal. A prime example is Vee Friends by Gary Vaynerchuk, who hand-drew his NFTs. While they may appear simplistic, the real value lies in the rewards they offer, such as event access and personal meetings.
Assuming you lack celebrity status or technical skills, we’ll concentrate on creating art-based NFTs, often referred to as PFPs (profile pictures). This model is easier to execute, and many successful collections—like Bored Ape Yacht Club and Cryptopunks—began as purely digital art.
Section 1.2: Character Creation
Next, it's time to develop a character. Many NFTs feature animals, but I quickly realized that most popular species were already represented. The same applied to robots, aliens, and other fantastical creatures.
As I explored further, I noticed a plethora of vampires and zombies. However, I found a gap in the market: The Bride of Frankenstein. I loved this choice not only for its iconic status but also as a way to introduce some diversity into a predominantly male space.
To enhance originality, I decided to depict her riding a bicycle. This choice added a distinct visual flair and supported the unique narrative I crafted.
Section 1.3: Crafting the Narrative
Every remarkable NFT collection has a compelling story. Mine draws inspiration from the original Bride of Frankenstein tale, but with a twist. In my version, she escapes the monster’s rage on his bicycle.
By emphasizing themes of female empowerment and autonomy, I pledged to donate 10% of profits to Girls Not Brides, an organization committed to ending child marriage globally.
Chapter 2: Bringing the Character to Life
Section 2.1: Collaborating with Artists
As someone without artistic skills, I knew I needed assistance. I reached out to various artists within my network, as well as their connections, to find a style that matched my vision.
Eventually, I connected with a streetwear artist from Indonesia whose work resonated with my concept. He had previously created artwork related to Frankenstein, making him the perfect fit.
We dedicated significant time to designing the character and developing various attributes—shoes, eyewear, hats, and more—that would differentiate each NFT in the collection.
Section 2.2: NFT Generation Process
While many collections feature between 5,000 to 10,000 NFTs, I chose to keep mine smaller. This decision stemmed from my intent to limit attributes and create exclusivity. I ultimately decided on 2,222 NFTs—enough for a community yet selective enough to feel exclusive.
Since the artist who designed the character specialized in one-off pieces, I sought a different digital artist in India to mass-produce the NFTs. After a rigorous selection process, I requested the creation of 4,444 pieces to choose from. After narrowing it down, I finalized my collection at 2,222 NFTs.
Section 2.3: Understanding the Technical Aspects
With the design phase complete, I now faced the technical side—selecting a digital currency, pricing, and establishing a "smart contract" to guarantee ownership. Lacking experience in these areas, I sought guidance.
After thorough research, I found a developer who offered reasonable rates. However, due to his growing workload, I had to restart my search. Fortunately, I found another developer whose work exceeded my expectations, and my collection was finally ready for launch.
Section 2.4: Building an Online Presence
If you thought the challenging part was over, think again. The hard work was just beginning—now I needed to promote my collection.
Twitter is the primary hub for NFT enthusiasts, where they gather for news and networking. Instagram also plays a vital role, and every reputable NFT collection has a Discord channel.
While I'm not a social media expert, I managed to set up these platforms and even built a website from scratch, guided by helpful resources like this informative video.
As I navigated this process, I was motivated to share my experience. It’s incredible what one can accomplish with a bit of knowledge, dedication, and perseverance.
Section 2.5: Marketing and Promotion Strategies
To generate interest and foster a community around my collection, I took on the role of a social media marketer. I crafted numerous tweets and Instagram posts, produced videos using iMovie, and dedicated months to organically growing our audience.
Throughout this journey, my content creation skills improved, and I refined our messaging to resonate more clearly with potential collectors. I also decided to invest in Facebook and Google ads and hired promoters for contests. Although I couldn’t afford influencers or collaborations, I was ready for the final step: launching my collection!
Final Thoughts
If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the NFT space, I hope my journey provides a useful roadmap. While it requires both time and financial investment, my experience illustrates that success is achievable without a team, extensive experience, or a significant budget.
For brevity, I've omitted many details, but if you have any questions or if I've missed something important, feel free to leave a comment, and I’ll respond directly.
Good luck!
