Navigating the Confusion of Medium: Questions from a Writer

Chapter 1: Unraveling My Confusion

As someone who has penned over 200 articles on Medium in recent years, one might expect that I would have a firm grasp on the platform's guidelines and norms. Unfortunately, that’s not the case for me; it often feels perplexing. I can identify three main reasons for this confusion: 1) the regulations are frequently updated; 2) I’ve encountered conflicting viewpoints; and 3) my age makes it challenging to keep up with new developments.

I often find myself uneasy, worried that I might unknowingly violate some unwritten rule, especially after hearing about the suspension of some accounts. While I’ve always adhered to the guideline against publishing adult content, I did experiment with incorporating the term "sex" in titles, believing it might draw in readers. However, that strategy hasn’t worked out for me, possibly due to my age affecting my credibility in this area.

I strive to be respectful and supportive of my fellow writers, and I’ve been fortunate to receive encouragement from those I admire. I avoid using vulgar or profane language unless absolutely necessary. Over the last couple of years, I believe I have improved as a writer. While I’m unsure what "better" truly means, I feel I’ve gained confidence in my abilities, and my writing has become more concise. Although I haven’t taken formal writing courses, my background in a solid Catholic education has equipped me with the skills to construct coherent and logical sentences. When I do choose to break the rules, it’s usually a deliberate attempt to convey a sense of urgency or busyness, often leading to run-on sentences and unconventional punctuation.

Thus, I reach out to the kind-hearted individuals in the Medium community, hoping that someone can shed light on my questions. I hesitate to label them as "silly" since, as we all know, "there are no silly questions." In return for your insights, I promise to follow your work closely, shower you with claps, and leave heartwarming comments.

I appreciate your help in advance—something I learned from an editor on Medium who signed off with "TIA." When I inquired about its meaning, he humorously clarified it stood for "Thanks In Advance," not the medical term I initially thought. My cultural references are rich and varied, shaped by my American and Italian heritage, diverse experiences, and the decades I feel most connected to: the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The 80s were a bit of a blur for me, and since then, I’ve struggled to keep pace with the rapid changes around me. Nowadays, it often feels like I’m living in a different universe, especially when tuning into events like the Met Gala or the Golden Globes.

I genuinely hope that the insights I gather will be beneficial not just for me but for others in similar situations. Here's to hoping for some enlightening answers!
