The Journey of Patricio Maduro

In our ongoing series "Essential Insights for Aspiring Journalists," we had the privilege of speaking with Patricio Maduro, the Director of Voice of Aruba Media Production & Communication. His passion for highlighting the rich cultural tapestry of the Caribbean has driven him to create Aruba TV. With over two decades in the industry, he identified a significant gap in the representation of Caribbean culture, leading him to establish a platform that resonates with audiences not just in the Caribbean but also in places like St. Maarten, Curacao, and Texas.

Before we delve deeper, can you share a bit about your background and what steered you towards journalism?

"My father was an underwater filmmaker during the 70s and 80s, and I often found myself experimenting with his equipment. We even owned a silent movie projector to watch his films. Additionally, he frequently brought home Popular Mechanics magazines, which undoubtedly inspired my career path."

Memorable Experiences in Journalism

Could you recount a particularly memorable story from your career?

"One of the most significant moments was the global media frenzy surrounding the Natalie Holloway case. Meeting journalists from the US and the Netherlands while they covered the story on Aruba was incredibly educational."

What about early mistakes? Any humorous anecdotes to share?

"When I first started, I accidentally left a segment unedited during a sportscast. When my colleague took over, some playful banter between us accidentally aired live. I received quite a few frustrated calls afterward! It taught me a valuable lesson: always ensure everything is edited before passing it on to someone else."

Current Projects and Aspirations

What exciting projects are you currently involved in?

"I'm working on the Aruba Channel on Airy.tv and a local parliament TV network set to launch in late 2022."

Have you had any memorable interactions with interesting individuals?

"In 2007, I had the chance to interview David Ortiz, aka 'Big Papi,' while working at Fenway Park during the World Series. Speaking with him was genuinely inspiring."

Advice for Aspiring Journalists

What guidance would you offer to those contemplating a career in journalism?

"This profession isn't a typical 9 to 5; it demands dedication and can often feel isolating. It's crucial to be passionate and to verify all facts before publishing."

What about sustaining your enthusiasm in this field?

"Maintain your passion! Embrace challenges and keep pace with technological advancements; they are vital tools for disseminating news quickly."

Using Success to Make a Difference

How have you leveraged your success to contribute positively to society?

"I've partnered with various foundations to help them gain exposure on a larger platform."

What motivates you in your work?

"The thrill of being on air drives me every day."

Influential Literature

Is there a book that significantly impacted your life?

"Think and Grow Rich inspired me to leave my job and start my own company. The initial years were tough, but a decade later, I successfully launched my own TV network."

Key Takeaways for New Journalists

To wrap up, what are the five lessons you wish you had known when starting out?

  1. Networking is Essential: Building relationships with politicians and industry veterans can provide invaluable insights and opportunities for your stories.
  2. Embrace Technology: Staying updated with the latest technology is crucial. I once struggled due to my lack of knowledge about FTP file uploads, which was a significant setback.
  3. Budget for Equipment: Initially, I underestimated the costs of essential gear like cameras, laptops, and travel expenses.
  4. Be Open-Minded: Some of the most bizarre stories can turn out to be true. I missed opportunities early on because I didn't conduct thorough research.
  5. Advocate for the Underprivileged: If I could initiate a movement, it would be to provide basic food and sanitary supplies to struggling families. Many are in dire need, yet their plight often goes unnoticed.

If you could have a meal with any public figure, who would it be?

"I would love to have breakfast with Donald J. Trump."

How can our readers connect with you online?

"You can find me on LinkedIn at linkedin.com/in/patricio-m-531b5a13, and follow Aruba TV at aruba.tv. We're also active on social media: @ArubaTvchannel on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter."

Thank you for sharing your insights, Patricio! We wish you continued success in your endeavors.
