Allow me to begin by sharing a bit about myself and my experience with mental health challenges. My name is Kevyn James, a 20-year-old college student currently in my second year. For the past two years, I have been navigating the complexities of a mental disorder known as Depersonalization. I also faced Derealization Disorder for a brief period, but thankfully, that has passed.

In this discussion, I aim to elaborate on how the nervous system can provide substantial support, particularly in moments of distress. Let's delve into this topic and keep our minds calm.

1. Automatic Responses to Threats

To give you a brief overview, the Nervous System is crucial for sending signals to our brain, overseeing various bodily functions. It consists of the spinal cord, brain, and an intricate network of nerves. The central nervous system primarily processes and responds to information, while the peripheral nervous system connects the brain to the rest of the body.

Understanding this, I have come to view the nervous system as a friend. I learned that my experiences with depersonalization were linked to how my central nervous system reacted to overwhelming anxiety, leading me to feel disconnected from my body.

When faced with extreme anxiety, the nervous system activates the fight or flight response, providing protection from perceived threats. For instance, during a panic episode following an LSD trip, I experienced intense anxiety, but my nervous system intervened, placing me in a dissociated state to shield me from further distress.

The first video titled "How Your Nervous System Works & Changes" explains the functions of the nervous system and how it adapts during stressful situations.

2. Adapting to New Challenges

As I continued to experience depersonalization, my nervous system remained vigilant, ready to respond to unexpected anxiety attacks. After my initial episode, I experienced two significant breakdowns at work. During these moments, my nervous system once again stepped in, numbing my mental pain and helping me cope.

While I felt embarrassed by my reactions, I also recognized that my nervous system was doing its job. However, this created a complicated relationship, as I realized that the more it shielded me, the more disconnected I felt from reality.

In hindsight, I understand that the nervous system was acting in my best interest, constantly on guard for anxiety triggers.

3. Pain as a Warning Signal

During my episodes of disconnection, I often felt numb to my surroundings, yet I was still aware of my physical discomfort. Tension in my muscles, headaches, and eye strain were all signals from my nervous system, indicating that I needed to address my well-being.

Without these alerts, I might have found myself in even worse condition. The nervous system works tirelessly to keep us informed about our bodily functions, and it deserves recognition for its efforts.
