Embracing Consistency: A Pathway to Growth and Change
Written on
Chapter 1: The Nature of Consistency
Is consistency inherently beneficial? This question has lingered in my mind throughout my writing journey over the past few months. The common advice I encounter is, “Stay consistent.” However, is consistency always advantageous?
Section 1.1: Reevaluating Consistency
My curiosity about this notion of consistency was sparked by my experiences on Twitter. I understand some may roll their eyes at the mention of the platform, but hear me out. Before I joined Twitter in March, I had no social media presence and wasn't even on Facebook. My primary goal was to use Twitter to promote my writing on Medium, which operates differently from Twitter—a topic for another time.
Initially, I tweeted twice a day. While I received a few likes, there was little engagement. Nevertheless, I maintained my tweeting routine, adhering to a consistent format. Despite my efforts, the responses were tepid. I persisted simply because I was unsure of what else to do.
As time passed, I recognized that if I desired different results, I needed to alter my approach or consider quitting. Since quitting is not in my nature, I took the time to reflect on what worked for others and what had marginally succeeded for me.
I began to experiment, slowly pivoting my strategies. I tried different formats, topics, and writing styles. This shift led to increased engagement with some of my tweets. Furthermore, by adapting, I gathered valuable data about my audience and what resonated with them.
Subsection 1.1.1: Key Takeaway
This experience imparted an essential lesson: consistency alone isn't sufficient. The key lies in what we choose to be consistent about.
Chapter 2: The Dual Facets of Consistency
While consistency is commendable when it involves positive actions—like daily writing, exercising, or treating others with kindness—it can also lead to negative outcomes if applied to detrimental habits. For instance, consistently indulging in junk food or being late for appointments can have adverse effects on oneself and those around you.

However, I am not dismissing the value of consistency entirely. My commitment to writing regularly on Medium and Twitter helped me uncover growth opportunities I hadn't anticipated. Through consistency, I was able to:
- Enhance my writing skills
- Cultivate a habit of writing consistently
- Connect with remarkable individuals
- Discover new ways to articulate my thoughts and explore innovative ideas
Section 2.1: Recognizing the Need for Change
Yet, persisting in negative behaviors can be counterproductive. It's akin to stubbornly driving in the wrong direction while expecting to reach the right destination. We must ask ourselves: Do our actions support or hinder our goals? Do they align with our values or contradict them? Are they yielding the desired results?
If the answer is "yes," then consistency is warranted. However, if the answer is "no," it's time to pivot. There's no merit in clinging to ineffective methods. Embracing flexibility and learning from missteps is crucial.
It's also important to evaluate our consistent actions over a reasonable timeframe. Success is rarely instantaneous; it takes time. I personally assess my Twitter activities monthly, reviewing analytics to inform my strategy for the upcoming month.
