To become an exceptional leader, mastering the art of communication is vital.

Growing up in the sunny town of Naples, Florida, I had the challenge of managing ADHD. My first-grade teacher, in a bid to help, positioned me on a T-shaped stool to curb my restlessness. However, she underestimated my energy; my legs continued their dance, creating a delightful yet chaotic ADHD symphony.

As I transitioned into adulthood and donned my professional persona, I discovered that my rapid speech was both an advantage and a hindrance. I often found myself speaking quickly, with thoughts racing faster than I could articulate them. Research indicates that individuals with ADHD often struggle with working memory, complicating their communication further. Others may face different challenges, such as speaking without considering their words or failing to convey their messages effectively.

Over time, I recognized that my shortcomings in communication led to numerous difficulties, including:

• Ensuring clarity on priorities
• Hiring suitable candidates
• Conducting effective sales calls
• Reporting and coaching team issues
• Clearly expressing necessary actions

In essence, communication is crucial for human interaction, influencing every aspect of our lives. It can either propel you toward your aspirations or hinder your progress. The most effective way to enhance your communication skills is to focus on clarity and brevity.

Being clear is straightforward, yet we often overlook critical details when we communicate. I recently observed a member of my Quality Assurance team struggle with clarity. An oversight in their communication regarding an expensive aircraft part resulted in significant financial losses and wasted hours for the team. Three missing words in their message had profound implications.

Clarity in communication enables your team to understand expectations and grasp the context. It also emphasizes your role as a leader, often referred to as the Chief Reminding Officer.

Equally important is the need to be concise. If you can express an idea in 30 words, challenge yourself to do it in 20. If you can do it in 20, aim for 10.
