Understanding the Ever-Changing Nature of Existence

Written on

The Nature of Change

In his writings, Marcus Aurelius likens existence to a river in a constant state of motion. He prompts us to consider how the awareness of change influences our daily experiences. In Meditations, he advises, "Contemplate frequently how swiftly all things are born and fade away." This idea of impermanence is a common thread across various philosophical traditions.

The River of Change

Heraclitus, a pre-Socratic thinker, famously remarked that the significance of a flowing river lies not in the idea that we can never encounter the same moment twice, but rather in the understanding that some things remain constant only through their transformation. Aurelius echoes this sentiment in his reflections, emphasizing the necessity of recognizing the perpetual flux of existence.

For instance, in passage 5.23 of Meditations, Aurelius writes:

Existence is like a river in ceaseless flow; its actions are an endless succession of change, with countless causes driving it. Hardly anything remains static, not even the most immediate experiences. Consider the vast expanse of time, both past and future, where all things inevitably disappear. Thus, it is folly for one to be consumed by ambition or resentful of their circumstances, as nothing is enduring or likely to weigh on them for long.

As Heraclitus succinctly stated, "Nothing is permanent but change."

Thought Experiment

Take a moment to reflect on a difficult situation in your life. How does viewing it through the lens of impermanence alter your perspective? Conversely, consider the positive aspects of your life. Does the realization that everything is transient shift your viewpoint on these moments?

Existence and the Passage of Time

In what is now recognized as Letters from a Stoic, Seneca emphasizes the significance of acknowledging the relentless passage of time. He wrote to Lucilius, stating:

Nature has granted us this singular, fleeting resource. Can you identify anyone who truly values their time, who comprehends the worth of a day, who recognizes that each day is a step closer to their end?

By frequently contemplating the swift nature of change, we come to understand the limitations of our control over existence. Seneca implores us to grasp the reality that time is our most precious asset.

"Consider the entirety of existence, of which you are merely a small fragment," Marcus Aurelius noted, "reflect on the vastness of time, where you occupy just a brief and fleeting moment; think about destiny — what portion of that are you?"
